About Our Class Levels

Level 1 Classes

Our level one classes are designed for students with little to no clay experience and those getting back into clay after a long hiatus. In a level one class, we cover the foundational skills necessary to begin creating beautiful and unique ceramics. We strongly suggest students take at least two 4-week level one classes to get a full grasp of the fundamentals before moving on to level two classes.

Level 2 Classes

Level two hand building classes build on the fundamentals developed in our beginner courses and are suitable for students comfortable with the basics of pinching, coiling, and slab. Level two classes aim to explore a vast array of techniques and processes to expand your knowledge base and strengthen the fundamentals.

Level two wheel classes are split into two segments - 2A Refinement and 2B Expansion. Refinement is your first step out of level one to work on honing and refining your skills. Expansion comes next, exploring a wider variety of forms and techniques.

Level 2X classes are speciality classes focused on a specific technique, process, form, or subject and designed with the intermediate student in mind. Deep dive into a subject matter to take your practice further.

Level 3 Classes

Level three classes are designed to push advanced artists into developing their own style within the ceramics medium.

All your class questions, answered!

    • Check the class schedule for upcoming sessions to see new and existing classes.

    • We love that so many people are curious about clay, and we acknowledge that some of our classes tend to sell out very quickly. To try your best to get a spot, we recommend logging in to register exactly at 12pm. If you’re trying to book a class with a friend, we suggest that one person buy two spots at once, instead of trying to book separately.

    • Classes are posted on a first-come basis each session so everyone has a fair shot at getting into the class of their choice. We are unable to pre-register students.

    • You can create an account on the site through the 'SIGN IN' button on the upper right. Adding your payment method prior to registration opening will help make signup go faster.

    • If you did not get into the class you want, you can add yourself to the waitlist on the class page once the class is sold out. If you get an email that a spot has been opened, and you are already registered for another class, you can grab that spot and we will refund you for the other class.

    • Names on the waitlist reset each session and don’t carry over, so you will need to sign yourself back up to the waitlist for that class day/time.

  • Take a level one class if you’re looking to refresh yourself on the basics or it’s been over a year since you’ve touched clay.

Challenge yourself a bit more with a level 2A class if you feel comfortable throwing a one-pound cylinder. We recommend folks take at least two sessions of level one classes before moving on to level two.

  • Practice makes perfect, particularly for ceramics. With your enrollment, you also get open studio time to come in outside of class and work. Open studio time is by appointment only and can be booked up to 5 days in advance. >OPEN STUDIO

Open studio time slots are limited so we cannot guarantee them as part of your class - but we do think it’s a nice bonus!

  • When you register, you will receive a confirmation email for your class. Prior to the first day of class, you can expect to receive an introduction email from your instructor with more specifics.

All the tools, aprons, and clay are ready to go for you, and we recommend you dress comfortably and to get dirty. We are here to help! If you require a specific accommodation for class, please email your teacher directly or info@penguinfoot.com.

  • While we encourage you to try to make it to all of your classes, sometimes life gets in the way. Open studio is the best option for making up missed class time.

You can reach out to your instructor to understand what you missed during class and when might be the best time to make up that specific class. Any missed time must be made up during your four-week session.

  • Request a refund 48 hours before your class starts for a full credit or back to your card minus a $10 processing fee. Be sure to read the full refund policy before registering!

  • We are unable to send emails out to individuals about the status of their work. We do our best to send out mass emails to everyone in a session or workshop to let them know timeline of when work will be ready.

It is your responsibility to come back and pick up or glaze your work.  Our kiln cycles take two weeks, so two weeks after you’ve put your piece up to be fired, it will be lovingly waiting for you to pick it up and take it home.

We hold onto work for 7 weeks before needing to discard it!

  • Due to limited shelf space, we unfortunately have to throw out all work — no matter how awesome — after seven weeks. If you cannot make it back to the studio within that time, you are welcome to send someone to pick up your pieces for you.

  • You’re gonna do great! Get in here!
